Scoperto un nuovo pianeta simile alla Terra. È stato battezzato Gliese 581g e dista da noi "soltanto" 20 anni luce. L'incredibile rivelazione si deve a un gruppo di ricerca dell' Università della California a Santa Cruz insieme al Carnegie Institution di Washington.
Si tratta del primo caso di un pianeta potenzialmente abitabile. Come spiegano gli esperti, l'abitabilità dipende da diverse variabili, tra cui l'acqua allo stato liquido e la presenza di atmosfera. E stando a quanto osservato grazie al Keck Observatory nelle Hawaii, su Gliese 581g potrebbe sussistere le condizioni affinchè tutto ciò avvenga.
Il pianeta, infatti, orbita a una distanza dalla sua stella madre tale da riceve potenzialmente la giusta energia per sostenere eventuale acqua allo stato liquido. E anche la sua forza di gravità, molto simile a quella terrestre, potrebbe creare le condizioni per la presenza dell'atmosfera.
La scoperta, pubblicata sulla rivista Astrophysical Journal, rivela inoltre che Gliese 581g farebbe parte di una famiglia planetaria, la Goldilocks zone, composta da sei pianeti, di cui 4 già noti, che orbitano intorno a una stella molto simile al Sole, la nana rossa Gliese 581 situata nella Via Lattea, nella costellazione della Libra. Vi ricorda qualcosa? Una sorta di sistema solare, di cui però non sappiamo ancora molto.
Dei pianeti, quello che ha destato maggiore curiosità è stato sicuramente Gliese 581g che, anche per massa e dimensioni è associabile alla Terra. Ecco alcune caratteristiche. Il suo moto di rivoluzione è di circa 36 giorni, le temperature medie di superficie vanno da -31 gradi a -12 gradi. Altra curiosità: un po' come avviene per la Luna con la Terra, il pianeta rivolge sempre la stessa faccia al suo sole, per cui un lato risulta costantemente illuminato, dunque più caldo, l’altro sempre buio e freddo.
